Encouraging Pedestrian Activity in Commercial Nodes and Corridors
Hennepin County Department of Housing, Community Works and Transit, which includes Minneapolis MN and suburbs, has contracted Pedestrian Studies (in 2008 - 09) to audit pedestrian activity and recommend actions to increase pedestrian friendliness. Barriers and opportunities related to pedestrian activity are being surveyed in the field and determined through interviews of retail and residential property managers, business owners, parks staff and police. Traffic volumes are being sampled to provide an overview of how the commercial areas currently serve pedestrians.
Factors discouraging traffic include: poor retail health, poor visual appearance and image, uncoordinated retail operations, limited transit service, poor perceptions of crime, convenient but dangerous jaywalking opportunities, absences? of sidewalks. Short term/long term action plan addressing the needs, possible resources and partners for improving walkability and foot traffic volumes will be submitted to five client cities under contract with the County.
